Materials Needed For Class

Everyday, you must bring your binder to class (with notebook paper), a pencil, and colored pencils.

Grading

Grading is based on a 9 week term and progress reports will be sent home halfway through the term.

Grading Scale for EWMS :

   90-100 A        80- 89   B       70- 79 C      60- 69 D        Below 60- F

To determine a student’s grade, I use a weighted scale:

35 % Tests: Determined by the average of all tests administered in the marking period.

25% Quiz: These will be both announced & unannounced. They will always cover concepts we have already covered in class. Unannounced quizzes are taken directly from recent homework problems and activities that we have discussed and corrected in class.

25% Classroom assignments: Determined by individual work in class as well as group work, labs, small projects and discovery activities.

15% Homework: For Math, Students are assigned 2 word problems to attempt nightly, Monday through Thursday. These are usually taken from sample EOG and Benchmark questions. These are not graded for accuracy but for the students attempt to solve them and SHOW THEIR WORK. For each night that students do not attempt their 2 homework problems, they will lose 25 points off their homework grade for that week. For Science, Students will be required to write a Current Event every week, due on Friday. This needs to be a paragraph summary of any Science related article they have read in a newspaper or magazine or seen on a news show (even if they saw it on Channel One news at school). They will receive a homework grade every week for this Current Event. Homework in Math and Science will not be accepted late.

Notebook Checks

Notebooks (Binders) will be checked for both Math and Science twice during a 9 weeks period. This will count as a test grade. It should be an easy 100 for students.

Assessment

Students will be given opportunities to participate in group activities, discussions, and independent practice. Tests will be announced at least three days prior to the scheduled day. Students are encouraged to briefly review on a daily basis in order to prepare for tests. Assignments not completed in class should be completed at home and turned in the following day. I do not accept late projects or current events. Late assignments will not be accepted after the fifth day. Class attendance, participation and attitude are important in order to be successful in class.

Textbook

Textbooks will be used mainly as a resource this year for looking up information or using the glossary to define words. We will be using a classroom set of books when necessary rather than sending textbooks home with students.

Make Up Work

Please try to keep absences to a minimum. It is very difficult to make up missed labs, classroom discussions and activities. After returning from an absence, students are given the number of days of the absence to turn in work assigned during the absence. Work handed in later than this time will receive no credit. Work that was assigned before the absence is due on the day the student returns to school. Also on the day the student returns to school, he/she should be prepared to take any test or quiz that was announced before the absence. It is the student’s responsibility to make-up any assignment when absent.

Agendas

Assignments will be posted on a daily basis. It is the student’s responsibility to copy any assignment into their agenda and share it with their parents. Our team will be using Remind (a free website) to send out reminders for homework, tests and projects as well as school events. A separate sheet will be sent home with instructions on how to sign up to receive these free updates.
